All farm leases start on the first of March in Iowa. Today is that day.
I took a long walk around the farm...our farm. Granted, we are only leasing it, but it is now my responsibility, my charge.
The whole farm is frozen right now. I am waiting to be able to begin frost seeding, filling time with paperwork, cutting fence posts and feeding cows.
I miss my wife back in San Francisco, but the seeding is important and can't be put off. The walk grounds me. I am finally a farmer.
It is the first of March. It is a new day, a new life.
