June is beautiful. July gifts us the first B.L.T.s of the season.
But August--August is the month that really kicks it down. Cucumbers ripen on the vine faster than they can be picked. Tomatoes virtually drip from the vines and watermelons, my favorite by far, begin to answer the promises made in May when the seedlings first appeared out of the ground.
For all its hot, sultry, miserableness, August repays us with unrepentant bounty on the farm and in the garden. August is when we put up fruits and vegetables to carry us through the dark austerity of January, when a hint of summer's flavor reminds us that it really is worth going on, if only to get back to her golden kiss.
And so, we celebrate this most giving of months with our August Abundance farm to table dinner on August 24th. Our menu is set and, if all goes right, almost everything we will serve will come from our very own farm. Now that is something to celebrate.
